LSD: Reopening, Arrest, Lawsuit and RISD’s No Confidence Vote

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

LSD reopened yesterday, closing a painful chapter that begun over a month ago when an older Deaf student, a 16 years old male, sexually abused a six years old female Deaf student in a bus.  The supervising chaperon was alerted by an alarmed student, but due to her limited familiarity of ASL, she ignored the [...]

Friday, October 24th, 2008

The BoT of Gallaudet announced that it will begin a search for the new president in the spring of 2009. Davila will not be involved in the presidential search. The new presidential position will become effective in 2010. A lesson had been learned from the previous search which was hurriedly conducted and completed within a [...]

Deaf Patient Awarded $400,000 From Doctor Due to No Interpreters

Friday, October 17th, 2008

A Hudson County jury’s $400,000 verdict for a deaf patient whose doctor refused her an interpreter may be a wake-up call for all professionals — including lawyers — that they risk liability for disability discrimination. This is a big victory.  Worse, malpractice liability insurance does not usually cover such liability, says plaintiff’s attorney Clara Smit. [...]

LSD Needs To Clean Up Its Act!

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

As we discussed not too long ago, unfortunately sexual abuses do occur in deaf residential schools, just like the hearing boarding schools and day programs, both hearing and deaf. However with better laws and supervisions, these violations are usually caught and referred to the law authorities to handle, unlike the earlier times where these incidents [...]

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

Dramatic life-and-death scene at NC School for the Deaf.  Football coaches jumped over fence to rescue a CODA who trashed a motorcycle.  Injured Motorcyclist is thankful, feeling prayers and finding a renewed faith in people. “Freeman, 21, from Morganton, was riding past North Carolina School for the Deaf on Saturday when he decided to ride a wheelie in front [...]

Gallaudet, RSD, SMSD Victory, and PDSD (Phoenix)

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Being out of town for the last two weeks,  I was away from the computer most of the time, especially in the first week. The break from the Deaf Cyberspace was refreshing while I attended to important family matters. Now that I’m back, I’ve decided to cut down the amount of blogging to some degree from now on to [...]

Deaf Community: Cultural Values and Double Standards

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

I stood back, struck with amazement and sadness at the furor, hurt, and anger within the Deaf Community. Are we so different from each other that we truly cannot understand each other and come to full acceptance of everybody? First of all, I do not want to see anyone hurt, nor do I want anyone fired [...]

MZ: An Ex-Founding DBC Core Member

Friday, July 11th, 2008

I’ve thought long and hard about this. I have encouraged DBC twice to become more transparent. I’ve asked two DBC leaders to vp with me, so we can discuss this further, but they both weren’t ‘available’. In e-mails, I asked them why they don’t want to acknowledge to the Deaf Community that they practice Deafhood [...]

Lack of Diversity in NAD? NAD Responds

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Two nights ago I got this angry comment in my blog: # 101. “THERE’S NO ANTI-RACIST TRAINING AT THE NAD CONFERENCE. THERE’S NO RACIST COMPONENT IN THE DBC. It’s a white deaf world. Here’s a preposterous proposal circulating at the NAD conference: Title: Deafhood training Introduced by: Ralph Singleton Seconded by: David Reynolds Proposed motion: the [...]

DBC: Bilingualism, Audism, and Deafhood?

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

In my last post DBC: Confusing Messages, I asked for clarification about the statements of a DBC representative quoted in the newspaper article as audism and cochlear implants weren’t mentioned in the mission statement of Deaf Bilingual Coalition: “The two groups will bring their competing agendas to Milwaukee in separate national conferences this week: one that [...]
