William Hurt to Marlee Matlin: “I Apologize for Any Pain I Caused” Marlee Matlin is spilling. William Hurt is sorry. Matlin has been making the rounds touting her new memoir, I’ll Scream Later, and raising some eyebrows with allegations that she was abused by Hurt during their two-year relationship that blossomed on the set [...]

“Former students at a school for the deaf in Saskatchewan were expected to file a class action lawsuit on Tuesday morning, alleging they were victims of physical and sexual abuse. Regina lawyer Tony Merchant told CBC News on Monday that he represents 52 people who attended the government-run R.J.D. Williams Provincial School for the Deaf [...]

This involves certain dynamics observed in both the blogs and vlogs in the Deaf Cyberspace. But the concepts also apply to everybody in real life, both hearing and deaf communities. Name calling, insults and put downs are considered emotionally abusive, designed to make the person feels bad about oneself. Low Functioning, Pea Brain, Stupid, and No [...]

I got an AIM on Facebook. This person started talking about herself, being Deaf, not married and living in XX where she doesn’t know many Deaf people. She wants to meet other Deaf people. Then she started hitting on me. Recognizing a scam, I decided to play it dumb, stringing her along, for the fun of it. [...]

We are actually starting to understand each other out better with less cyberbullying. Some people insist that all Deaf babies and children have a right to ASL. Actually, no. According [...]

LSD reopened yesterday, closing a painful chapter that begun over a month ago when an older Deaf student, a 16 years old male, sexually abused a six years old female Deaf student in a bus. The supervising chaperon was alerted by an alarmed student, but due to her limited familiarity of ASL, she ignored the [...]

When I was at Gallaudet, I have encountered many female students who got raped on campus. Just like other universities and colleges, Gallaudet has a serious problem with sexual assaults between the students. I’ve been an advocate for some students while lending my eyes and shoulder to others for support. The handling of the rape cases had been problematic [...]

As we discussed not too long ago, unfortunately sexual abuses do occur in deaf residential schools, just like the hearing boarding schools and day programs, both hearing and deaf. However with better laws and supervisions, these violations are usually caught and referred to the law authorities to handle, unlike the earlier times where these incidents [...]
