Please make sure the next president of the Gallaudet University has this agenda and the Gallaudet Law School can be developed within a year.

American Bar Association will work with you forming this Gallaudet Law School and will require the law professors to hold at least J.D. degrees (Doctor Juris Earned from any ABA-accredited law schools). Not a Ph.D. or not a M.A. or M.S. degree. We already have plenty of deaf and hard of hearing people who hold J.D. and they are ready to teach you, the next powerful generations!

Dear Dr. Fernandes and Dr. Jordan:
I, The concerned alumnus of Gallaudet University included KDES and MSSD. I read and heard the news about the protest especially the arrest of about over 130 deaf protesters last friday October 13. It was so sickeningly but it was very courageous of those deaf protestors to be arrested for civil disobedience. The ongoing crisis of Gallaudet protest are affecting the current student, faculty and alumnus also affect the world such as Canada, Denmark and United Kingdom who look up to Gallaudet for guidance and appropriate leadership. The ongoing crisis is hurting Gallaudet image also this crisis are not making Dr. Fernandes and Dr. Jordan look good because it makes them look bad. The reputation and prestige at Gallaudet are dangerously damaging by prolongation of this crisis. If Dr. Fernandes do not resign then Dr. Fernandes would not be able to survive presidency with no support and confidence from students, faculty and alumnus. It will be very lonely and empty presidency for Dr. Fernandes to lead if she refuse to resign. The survival of Gallaudet University does not depend on Dr. Fernandes or Dr. Jordan alone. Is it what you want to be remembered for, Dr. Fernandes as president whose the position would be lonely, unhappy, unfulfilling and empty? Dr. Fernandes, please resign and keep your dignity alive for yourself. Dr. Fernandes, you would be honorable woman if you resign so you, Dr. Fernandes would have our respect earned from students, faculty and alumnus. It would not be good start to be president of Gallaudet University under dark clouds around you with protest ongoing. The students, faculty and alumnus are not your friends because they all are your foes (enemies) who do not support you and do not believe in you to be ideal president. If you do not resign from position as president then you will have enemies when you become president. It is not peaceful feeling. It is not peaceful place to be president of Gallaudet University with the enemies. Gallaudet University depend on survival for current students, future students who want to go to Gallaudet and alumnus who support Gallaudet also the world look up to Gallaudet. you, Dr. Fernandes have many-sided talents and skills in the other important areas of deaf education somewhere. It is hard to be woman as president of Gallaudet University with no support and confidence of students, faculty and alumnus which is sad and painful. your reputation and your respect-Dr. Fernandes are tarnished and damaged that you chose not to resign as president of Gallaudet University. Dr. Jordan , I am disgusted by this crisis that is ongoing . This crisis is not good for any of us. your reputation and your respect are tarnished and damaged. you are about to be retired under the clouds of controversy, how sad and empty it is. How sad and painful Dr. Fernandes is also under the clouds of controversy. If you want to be retired and leaving Gallaudet University under good terms then Do the right thing and find resolution for Gallaudet University to stop or end crisis with assistance from Board of Trustees. If you want to be retired and leave Gallaudet University then leave as honorable person with dignity and grace. Dr. Fernandes and Dr. Jordan, you both are in no-win situation, how sad it is. If you care about Gallaudet University then please do right thing by finding resolution with assistance by Board of Trustees with dignity and grace to end crisis that is getting out of control dangerously. Unite for Gallaudet!

CHANGING OF THE GUARD AT GALLAUDET UNIVERSITY

Open Letter from Mark Alan Corson, past GU SBG President and current GUAA Greater Los Angeles Chapter President in support of our protesters at Gallaudet University (GU) including resolutions from our esteemed members of the Faculty, Staff, Students and Alumni (FSSA) and others including Gallaudet University Alumni Association (GUAA) and National Association of the Deaf (NAD).

Dear Gallaudet Community:

I am in full support of GU Faculty, Staff, Students and Alumni (FSSA)’s two demands as the following:

1) Reopen the presidential search process
2) No reprisals for students, staff, faculty, and alumni.

Legacy of our chameleon champion, GU President Dr. I. King Jordan, is being severely damaged permanently due to his decisions resulting in having a Black Friday, October 13Th, 2006. It is recorded as a black day in the annals of our Deaf History.

Audacious judgment of authorizing arrests resulting in sending our protesters including our four famed Valencia Brothers of DynaMingle’s National Deaf Basketball Team Champions, esteemed Tim Rarus of DPN fame, Gallaudet students and others, especially our native sons and daughters from our Golden State, California, to Washington, D.C. Police Building/ jail needlessly.

Now we learn of GU President I. King Jordan’s announcement of the postponement and/or cancellation of our annual Homecoming Weekend festivities at GU this weekend.

Continued refusal to step aside or to resign on the part of our GU President designate, Dr. Jane K. Fernandes, not a people person, as well as the unwillingness of our GU Board of Trustees to ask
Dr. Fernandes to step aside or to resign and to reopen the presidential search process, will continue to deteriorate the good feelings and support for Gallaudet University among the Gallaudet Community and the Deaf Community globally. Such an impasse is not productive. The Gallaudet Community members, by large, do not accept our incoming President, Dr. Fernandes as our 9Th President.

During our 1988 DPN, Dr. Elizabeth Zinser recognized the aspirations of the Deaf Community of a Deaf President Now (DPN) movement and resigned as our seventh GU President and she moved on, serving as President of another prestigious university.

Time is of essence as we must move on by completing the following common sense steps as there is a continued impasse:

Immediate stepping aside, resignation or removal of GU President designate, Dr. Jane K. Fernandes.

Retirement of current GU President, Dr. I. King Jordan.

Appointment of an interim GU President by considering an excellent pool of nationally recognized creditable, knowledgeable and qualified deaf individuals while reopening the presidential search process.

Re-organization of our GU Board of Trustees including a board majority of Gallaudet alumni; representation from the students, faculty and staff as well as continued representation from the U.S. Congress – two representatives from The House and one representative from The Senate.
Reopen the GU presidential search process.
Separation of our GU Alumni Office/GUAA from GU as it must be completely autonomous from GU.

No reprisals for our protesters including GU students, faculty, staff, alumni and others.

Let’s move on and achieve greatest good for Gallaudet University (GU) and deaf people everywhere!

JKF becoming provost increases her chances to become president is the main motive behind the smoke screen. Pigs can fly but like someone quoted, and even mentioned that it also explodes into your face! No one appreciates and is totally unacceptable! No matter how the process was flawed or unflawed! If I was a Deaf Donald Trump, I would have loved to tell IKJ and JKF with his famous saying “You Are Fired”.

But we aren’t all Donald Trumps, and unfortunately we are not pigs, but a minority group of people on 99 acres of land, let us stand as Deaf Individuals, and let us be who we are, wholeheartedly being DEAF, even the Deaf, the Hard of Hearing or the Hearing even embrace it, we preserve the core of our Culture, our Heritage to focus on Educational pursuits “As Long there are deaf people”, (we all know who quoted it!) so let us be!!!! Alumni, Faculty, Staff and especially Students are all assets of our University, we are all behind Gallaudet all the way, to have them resign or be FIRED!!!

IKJ, its almost too late for you to have JKF to resign, so its more likely, you two will fall and be disgraced by the deaf community, and be outsiders! Shall we continue the DPN until we get one of our very own who can represent our Alta Mater probably for the first time in history ever!!!??!!!

If you are thinking about coming to Gallaudet, but you are having second thoughts, let me give you my perspective on the impact of lockdowns on your education.

I have been in numerous protests and lockdowns throughout my academic life. I did my undergraduate studies at the University of Buenos Aires. We locked-down the university so many times I could not count them. On my first semester there, I had to give oral finals on Child Development without having attended one single class because every Thursday my school was locked-down. I did not graduate on the day I was planning to because of a lockdown. Do I regret having picked up that school? Not at all. Am I angry at the students who decided to lockdown the university without my consent? No. I am actually very thankful.

In spite of all the protests and the lockdowns, I did get a wonderful education. What’s more: because of all the protests, I got a great education. I have an academic background solid enough to be a straight A student in a PhD, in spite of the fact that English and ASL are my third and forth languages. What got me so far was not the amount of information I was passed on. The cute power point presentations did not do the trick either. What got me so far are some basic things that I have learned at that university. I learned that you never take for granted what a teacher or a book tells you without raising a question. I learned that institutions, authority and science are human, historical constructions, and that a good student should know how to deconstruct them. I learned to critically analyze a text so that, when someone tells you that “we need to work together to address the issues that confront us” and in the next sentence he writes “we need to accept our next President” he is not really meaning the first point. I learned to look at the big picture so that when someone is complaining about a week without classes I can see that that a week is nothing when compared to many years of not having the education you really deserve. I did not learn all theses things in the classrooms. I learned them during lockdowns.

To learn how to think for yourself and to challenge authority is the best education you can get. So when I saw those brave kids being arrested, I was not horrified. I thought to myself “to learn to think for yourself and to stand for what you think so bravely is the best education you can get.” So I thank the protestors for that.

I do encourage you to come to Gallaudet in these difficult times. Even if you do not get to pass 8th street, you will learn things that are going to make you smarter for life.
