Wonder the case is over or still waiting.. My case is over. That’s bulls**t with Hospital and doctor lost and I won.. Due to refused to pay interpreter and want to use my children’s interpreter.. I say to testified that Abuse my children for not paying my children to earn… Child Labor? I won the case.. but not settlement is no good! I feel disvantaged of my lawyer were not good and settlement due to ADA law is blurr and valueless? Force Hospital to hire ASL interpreter.

I am sorry to hear this. At bed helplessly, you could not fend for yourself with the doctors’ decisions. That’s scary. I have witnessed my mom’s ailing condition at bed, and my father had to fend for her with doctors’ decisions. I was astonished. I also was disturbed…

Yes, the importance about this is we need to stand and fight for the better.

I tried to request an interpreter while my hearing wife was ill at the Mercy Hospital in Portland, Maine. The RN strongly suggested against it. I was lost in the sea of scrambled words. Situations like this must end at ONCE! Last week, a local municipal court clerk was advising against the request for an interpreter. Are these people naive of the recent federal amendment known as ADA? Then we must educate the mass.

These ignorant, uneducated,big-time trippin,hearing people are just what they are, ignorant, uneducated, and big-time trippin.. Why do we as Deaf people, AND as human beings gotta be passive or quiet WHEN its our lives that is on the line? There are thousand of hearing people suing Doctors and Hospitals for malpractice. And We deaf people should be Passive and Quiet when we want to live a little longer? Something seriously wrong with this picture here.

MZ, I feel for you. It occurred to me a two years ago. It was devastating. The Department of Public Health does not find anything wrong. A two months ago, I went to the State House to make the presentation about my personal experience — ER rights. Um .. a long story — It is due to the major communication breakdown between me and the security guard. He knew I am Deaf and he refused to write down the paper. Also He did not allow me to finish the sentence. Sigh … a long story. One of the guards injured my left thumb — A torn ligament. It takes a year and half to heal. I am awfully shame of this incident. Sigh .. Ever since that happen, I feel powerless and hurt. I am very afraid to go to ER if needed. The hospital is only 5 minutes away.

I want to say this. When I was in the hospital long ago, I had no interpeters. I had to rely on my mom, who didn’t know sign language all her life, yet became my only patient advocate for me. I wasn’t informed of any much about my condition other than to say “you’ll be all right”.
Believe me, I was scared, frightened, and all through the rest of my stay my heart rate shot up so high I will never forget it.
To this day, I avoid that hospital. If I ever have to go to a hospital again, I hope the one I choose to go to will be the one that will treat me with respect, honesty, dignity(sp), and like a real human being. Most of all, I’ve asked my doctor, who’s working with me every 6 months, to honestly monitor my health and not to hide anything. I rather face the serious problems than unexpecting a sudden end to my life.
Mishka, I would be happy to work with you, blogside by blogside to make sure we advocate more of deaf patient rights out there.
