An update:
More legislators are now supporting SSSD!
“Baker, R-Lehman Township, said the Department of Education has not offered a convincing argument about deficiencies in the school’s program.
“Gov. Rendell’s decision is a wrong one, and the way the Department of Education wants to carry it out is seriously flawed,” Baker said. “They announced this closure with no plan in place. It is very unsettling that parents are being forced to make decisions now, with no real assurances that their children’s unique needs will be met. It is not the fault of the students or the school that Pennsylvania has a budget problem.” Area’s lawmakers lobby for deaf school | Wilkes-Barre News | The Times Leader

I’m giving this the benefit of doubt but hope this isn’t a covert way for that politician and his counterparts to buy pacifying time in the meantime. At least he’s giving Scranton time to get it’s act together because logic suggests tiebreaker criteria (which schools to close) would probably point to the supply versus demand dilemma (now that parents are flocking to WPSD) not to mention the dreaded test question: pupil and personnel performance. That’s where we need to get realistic and tough with ourselves. No more of sentimentality bull which doesn’t carry weight anymore as it did in the old days.

Karen Mayes, thanks for the tidbit. What remains to be seen is the item-by-item breakdown of this budget. We have been jacked by blanket proclamations but I’m giving this a fair benefit of doubt.

Hi,
My son attends Scranton State School for the Deaf. I want to Thank everyone for there suport for all the childern at SSSD and for the future ones. We really need people to step up and write a letter or make a phone call to your State Reps. There is a web site open now to learn more http://www.sssdsos.com please check it out. There are childern there that don’t have anyone to speek up for them so help them.
Let Ed Rendell know that SSSD needs funds to teach basic education to deaf childern .The 4 Collage and Univerity’s getting 100 million dollars for campus maintains can afford to share the money need to operate SSSD. After all what message is Rendell sending to higher education? That its ok to take from those with special needs?
Please, Please help SSSD get the funds that they need to continue the fine job the staff does.
Thank You
