Good Morning America Today: Marlee Matlin and MSSD Performing Arts Company

This morning Marlee Matlin and the Dancers from MSSD Performing Arts Company were shown on Good Morning America.

Check out the videoclip:  http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=4511890

It is not captioned. However, you can still see the bits of signing by by Marlee and the MSSD dancing entourage composed of both MSSD and KDES students.

Now people are learning that not just Marlee Matlin  of the ABC show “Dancing with the Stars, but countless other Deaf people do enjoy the music and the dancing.  Heck, some can do a mean dancing, better than the average hearing dancer!  I am not a fan of the show “Dancing with the Stars”, but a friend convinced me to watch the dancing competition last week.  Marlee Matlin did an awesome job dancing!

“Read my hips”   That’s a catchy slogan :)

Thank you very much for inserting the video clips of GMA. Totally, I forgot to tape it by TiVo this early morning before I took off to work. Fortunately, I don’t have to miss this episode.

Marlee has evolved greatly since the very first film, “Children of a Lesser God”. I personally believe she will have more opportunities to come and hire more deaf and hard of hearing actors into the entertainment industry.

    Thank you again!

Deaf people can dance? I did not know that…isn’t it amazing?…look at them. They are just like us…wow! We didn’t know that. Oh They can feel the vibration? oh that is just so awesome….oh look at the hearing aid device…it helps deaf people can hear…marvelous, isn’t that something? My heaven’s sake!

  3. Lisa C. Says:

Thank you for showing the videoclip. I had missed it earlier.

  4. Penny Says:

One more…I hope that Deaf actress and actor in the future will forbid any interviewers given on TV to ask them about their disabiliy. No more. This has to stop…I want them to allow interviewers to ask about their talents and why they are fascinated with characters or the play itself but no more about disability. This has to stop.

  5. Penny Says:

    I mean…asking them about their talents…

  6. h... Says:

I agree with penny. reporters or whoever asking/talking about their disability is getting old. but there are alot of people that still dont know that we deaf CAN do anything.

  7. Mishka Zena Says:

    No kidding.

I’ve had two hearing people asking me on the Internet if I can drive. @ @

    D U H!

  8. Amy Cohen Efron Says:

  9. Cobra Says:

Thank you for showing the video clip.

  10. - Ron - Says:

Geez! Why did ABC news have to include Bill Austin (CEO of Starkey Laboratories) when they were showing Marlee Matlin and MSSD students’ dance performance? I suspect that Bill saw this as an opportunity as a free promotion of his business and wonder why can’t they simply focus on Deaf people’s uniqueness that lead their success? It is too obvious that ignorance still exists in ABC News.

  11. Penny Says:

    Ron-

I agree with you. I strongly encourage Deaf person who is asked to attend for interview on T.V. should demand in contract that the T.V. production will not add individuals in the interview for their business like with the CEO from Starkey…Deaf people like me and you need to take more control and not allow anyone to puppet us from media etc. I have seen movie stars making sure that interviewers do not ask them some personal questions. They are taking more control and now it is all up to us to take the stand too. Thanks for bringing this up.

  12. Cheryl from MA Says:

MZ, thanksssss!! i didnt know she would be on “GMA” neat clip :) and can u drive? hahaha \../,

  13. Bill Says:

I found a copy on youtube, so I’ll see about getting the captions up this week.

  14. CoachCreech Says:

    Thanks for sharing those clips.

  15. Candy Says:

There’s always going to be ignorant people no matter what! lol

  16. Davy Says:

MM said Vote vote vote by her finger spell ……. where her say PLEASE VOTE. nothing I do not see SAY Please !
    Ha!

    Davy

  17. Bill Says:

Yes, Candy there are always ignorant people, but the more people learn, the less ignorant they become. The good news will be when there is a deaf person on a show, and nobody notices because it happens all the time and it’s just another version of normal.

This video is Captioned now, -

  18. Stanelle Says:

“Read my hips!” LMAO!! I love that!! I am quoting you on my website today!! Woot!!

  19. Stanelle Says:

As to the dumb Hearing question about you driving Miska,..”Ignorance lives on!!”

    When will they ever learn?

I am still asked online..”STANELLE,…CAN YOU REALLY READ AND WRITE ABOVE A FOURTH GRADE LEVEL!!!”

My answer,..”Yes, I can read and write about a forth grade level and if you, dear Hearing questioner can read and write above a fouth grade level,..yourself,..perhaps,..just maybe,..perhaps,..you can read the book that I helped write if you go to your local library or maybe to my Xanga website!!

Can Deaf people dance and drive? Dumb questions!! Stanelle goes off muttering to herself!!

  20. Francie Says:

I am surprised not to see any blogs…at least I haven’t found any….about how the end of the interview wrapped up. As an interpreter and a CODA, I was appalled that when the interviewer (can’t remember her name just this minute) finished her segment with Marlee turned to the camera to introduce the next segment and then turned to the interpreter that “she doesn’t need to know this.” Why the heck show it then, I guess none of us needed to know it. I hope Marlee let her know what she did was WRONG. As in interpreter I experience this all the time. I had higher hopes for GMA.

  21. Mishka Zena Says:

Francie, I don’t know about others, but I didn’ see this particular show.

What you said.. yes I’ve heard of that many times and you are right. It shouldn’t happen. I don’t know why some people think it’s ok to say that… Not thinking? It’s certainly very insensitive.

Thanks for sharing this with us.
