factsuncovered@ncsd is power hungry person. the deaf person who told on the students has very audist attitude toward a lot of Deaf staff and teachers and student. that person should be encouraging students rather than placing blames on parents.

we are parent and we do all we can for our kids being visible reading with them talking to them everything that a parent could do. we bring our kids to school expect the teachers to do their job not to hurt our kids self esteem. i have a daughter who comes home crying because the teacher mind you hearing teacher who signs shit tells her signing is wrong. that very same teacher lied to us in our face in iep meeting and we blasted her for it.

the students suffered it was not about hearing vs deaf geez get that out of your mind it is about the quality of education and dorm life!!! these students are very special very vocal and factsuncovered is being blind. illegal activities were going on changing grades so their report looks good enrollment dwindling only 82 students how is that such improvement factsuncovered??? Yes Local Education Agency is the blame and many parents are fighting this too. They have so much battle to fight and you are just sitting htere collecting nice pay and benefits!!!

Lindsay need to get out period no tranfer to another cushy job and jody self needs to resign she treats those students as they were in reform school. she used to work for reforms school.

there is a staff who fix IQ score to make some students smarter than they really are or not smarter but they are smart. ask about that school psychologist!!

there are many GREAT staff who are hearing and deaf are ready to quit because of the audism attitude!!! so its Deaf and Hearing are working together to fight this.

People like factsuncovered and der sankt shouldn't say anything because really you both have no ideas what it is like. rather to put kids in public school ncsd should be = the public school standards of education.

bilingual bi culture works best and the students are not even getting that!!!! the very interim director said its a deaf thing they wont get it and dont expect them to get it.... what kind of attitude is that!

"Know the Facts...what you said paint a sadly-familiar picture of the majority of deaf schools. Even Indiana School for the Deaf is not immune to it... there are MANY students who struggle at the deaf schools and that there are many parents who are NOT involved. I wondered that about NCSD when the first news of protest came out and hoped that we would become more aware of the needs of deaf children to be met, not to be ignored... with the state budget cuts, etc... it is getting more of a challenge for the staff, administrators, and the teachers to make sure that the students accomplish the academic goals set up the the state (academic standards.)

Also I read "Factsuncovered@NCSD" blog which makes sense to me. It does not happen at NCSD only, but at other deaf schools and blind schools and other schools as well. As long as people who work at the kind of schools with heart, kudos to the students for having them.

Ahhh... school politics. *sigh*"

FYI, some of the statements made by #53 don't match what I've been told by the NCSD insiders... so keep in mind we don't know the real agenda of this person's propaganda

Dear Know the Facts...

I completely agree with what you said. Based on what you wrote, it seems like you are an insider of the school system. The information you shared are valuable and it rang the truth of what was really going on at North Carolina School for the Deaf. It is not about the director's signing skills, or squelching student's right to express. It is much bigger problem that very few people are able to understand.

I am sure that lots of other people who are working for school (i.e. teachers, administrators or support staff) are itching to tell the actual truth, but I can imagine they are struggling with how to share the information out.

Thank you so much for sharing the facts with us. I am in a full agreement to what you said.

Someone also said that there should be no excuse for our students reading below grade level. Does anyone know how the system works in NC? When someone has a deaf child they do not have a choice where to send them to school. They go directly to the public schools. The public schools keep them where they only have an interpreter to communicate with. They keep them there until they fail out and start to hurt their test score percentages. Then they come to us (around middle school). They don't have a full language and can't read because their interpreters have been doing their work for them. Research shows that parents of deaf students are the BIGGEST predictor of thier reading success. More than 90% of our kids parents do not sign fluently or at all. WHich means they had a MAJOR language delay to begin with. If you don't have language you can't read. Our students start out at a disadvantage because of this and it makes it nearly impossible to catch them back up. The students that are able to succeed and pass tests are kept in the public school and we never see them. It is easy to blame the school, but you need to look at the bigger problem- the law concerning placement of deaf students in NC. If there is anything that needs to be protested it is that.

I want to clear something up. There are many great staff at NCSD both deaf and hearing. There are some bad staff at NCSD both deaf and hearing. Being deaf doesn’t automatically make you a great teacher so saying that all of the hearing staff need to be replaced is ridiculous and discriminatory which is what we are working to stop right? We all need to stick together in this and stop thinking hearing verses deaf and start thinking productively as group that supports deaf people and deaf culture regardless of if you are hearing or deaf. I would like everyone to know that it was a DEAF staff member that informed the administration about the protest and that is why it was prevented from happening. I also know that there are some parents that want to complain about the education of the students. However, these are the same parents that I have seen NOT support their child at home and fail to show up when they are asked to attend meetings at the school. Everyone is very quick to assign blame instead of admitting that they are actually some of the problem. As far as low expectations of students, I have not seen that here. However, we do have the job of telling parents the sometimes harsh realities that they do not want to face. Many of our students are functioning way below grade level and it is not appropriate to mislead parents into thinking otherwise. Because of the special education laws in NC, students are required to pass the same state mandated tests as their hearing peers if they are left in the high level programs. This is absolutely unfair, but it is the reality. Because of this some students in the past have not earned diplomas. It is not that we have low expectations, but that the system is flawed and unfair for our students. If they can’t pass those tests, they have to be moved to a lower program in order to earn a diploma.

All I am asking is that you know all of the facts before you make accusations.

In a time crisis, it is best that we all remain calm. Dr. Linda Lindsey will be stepping down as the director of NCSD effective April 1. The only concern is that she will take a state position with OES in Raleigh. This is a small battle won, but the remaining powers to be are corrupt. Make no mistake, a series of plans have been set in motion that will address these powers to be at high levels of government. Patience and fortitude will be in our best interest in this manner. A rather large group of NCSD's employees (hearing and deaf) are extremely dedicated and focused to put children first, educate, care, and advocate for their benefit. Emotional attachment to an issue is a very overwhelming feeling. We must continue to stay focused and fight the good fight.
