Yes, I remember Doug Burke. He hoped to create a new college out in the west, but Dr. Edward C. Merrill opposed it.

SWCID was founded by Dr. Douglas N. J. Burke more than 30 years ago. Dr. Burke, a
Gallaudet graduate in 1955,
was a brilliant young deaf educator with a vision. He also played a large role in founding the National Theatre of the Deaf. He also founded poetry and drama guide which later became “Hughes Memorial Theatre” based in Washington, D.C. Later he founded Miss Deaf American Pageant in the NAD. Something tragic known as RH-arthritis ended the peak of his life. Had it not been for this rare form of arthritis, he would not have allowed anything to happen to SWCID.
