Gallaudet BoT Candidates For Nominations
I’ve been meaning to do a vlog on this, but I became distracted working on Daphne Wright’s trial. Since time is running out, I’m writing a post instead. The deadline for nominations to BoT is tomorrow. The nomination must include a resume and a biographical sketch. Right now there are seven vacancies available out of eighteen positions. This is the best opportunity to enact a major change in the constituency of BoT. We need members who totally believe in the equality of deaf people and their right to a high quality education in a healthful atmosphere with no limits on their communication.
Remember.. BoT was the reason DPN occurred when the BoT chairperson, Spilman refused to listen to Gallaudet stakeholders’ demands for a Deaf President. Fast forward eighteen years, Deja Vu. Unity for Gallaudet was the result of BoT’s failure to be responsive to the majority of Gallaudet. However, the conduct of BoT during the protest was downright egregious. They consistently looked away for six months, refusing to get involved while both Jordan and Fernandes besmirched the image of Gallaudet. They ignored the insistent pleas from Gallaudet constituents for intervention. Even worse, when the students were injured by DPS and 134 students were arrested, the BoT wasn’t even interested. Gallaudet’s image remains heavily damaged to this day.
The dereliction of BoT was acknowledged when MSA blasted them harshly.
We need a BoT ever mindful that their top priority is the welfare of Gallaudet and not the president, nor their egos. These candidates must be exceptionally strong so as to break down the pervasive plantation mentality ruling the BoT. These members must have the pulse of Gallaudet securely on their fingertips and embrace the principle of shared governance, a standard procedure of any university, meaning that they must keep an open mind to the whole Gallaudet community.
Simply stated, we cannnnnnnnot afford a third protest–which may happen unless BoT changes its anarchic and closed system. I did my part nominating few people for BoT. Did you?

President Davila announces Provost Search Committee members; outlines committee’s duties
April 2, 2007
TO: Campus community
FROM: Robert Davila
RE: Provost search update
As you know, we are conducting a search for the new provost. I have worked closely with faculty officers to develop a process for establishing the Provost Search Committee. The search committee includes: five faculty, three staff, two students, and one administrator.
Each of these constituencies nominated a group of its members for service on the committee. The Faculty Officers Advisory Committee was charged with finalizing the membership from among the names submitted.
The search committee will begin meeting shortly to elect a chairperson from among the faculty representatives, and to develop an interview process and timeline. At the conclusion of the interview process, I have asked the search committee to provide me with the names of the acceptable candidates from which I will select the new provost. I would like to receive the committee’s slate of acceptable candidates no later than May 1. I wish to thank the members of the search committee for their help in conducting this important task.
The following individuals will serve on the Provost Search Committee:
Faculty:
Isaac Agboola
Paige Franklin
Irene Leigh
Ann Powell
Franklin Torres
Staff:
Paul Blakely
Rebecca Goldenbaum
Sarah Hamrick
Students:
Jeanine Wiesblatt (SBG)
Robert Sirvage (GSA)
Administrator:
Eileen Matthews
Gallaudet University
Commentary Dr Michael Moore had performed exceptionally well as an Interim President under difficult times ever imagable. During the heyday of the protest, Dr Moore can be seen among the protesters during all hours. In a sharp contrast to Dr. Fernandes who were reportedly aloof and distant to the students, Dr. Moore was constantly conducting constructive dialogues with the students, listening to them respectfully. Many times Dr Moore looked exhausted, but did he quit? No, he kept on like the Energizer until the BoT rescinded the presidential appointment of Dr. Fernandes. Hands waving to Dr Moore for a great job! MZ

Out of that list, only 4 are the most appropriately qualified to serve on board; Dr Tom Holcomb, Dr. Klopping, Paul Singleton and Suzy Rosen Singleton. I think I prefer the candidates’ educational backgrounds and career/resume to exceed the MA level. Many of those are popular, well liked, well respected for their strong advocacy for Deaf rights and for Gallaudet, but to serve on board? I feel there needs to be more to it than simply being an activist. There are a few that should not even be on that list.
But the sweetest ultimate revenge would be putting Tim Rarus on board! Rub that one into IJK’s face!
I think Jerry Covell should be on board. He is brilliant and knows his stuff around politics, policies, procedures and is a strategist. He also refuses to be bullied by others. Historically, members on the board seem to submit to the popular views or opinions of others members or were strong-armed. We need strong people on board – people like Jerry.
Methinks Dr Moore should serve too but I betcha he is just dog-tired from leading Gallaudet since Fernandes was promoted to president-designate and departed from her provost job. He probably fantasizes about sitting on a lounger on an island with an umbrella in his mixed drink right now…
Just my 2 cents!

GallyNet has a longer list, but the archives are closed for some reason.
Jerry Covell would be a good one, I agree. He was a classmate of mine and for sure, he was outspoken.
I am under the impression that current Gallaudet employees cannot serve as a BoT member due to conflict of interests, but now I am not so sure. Harvey Goodstein is a BoT member, but was he appointed while he was working at Gallaudet? *trying to remember* does anyone know?

Jerry and I took same classes for a couple of years. I was there when Jerry, Tim, Bridgetta, and Greg were handpicked to be student leaders by our teacher, Mary Malzkuhn. Jerry was chosen for his expertise in legal research, knowledge in policies, procedures and ins and outs of the political platforms. He fed the other 3. Greg was the “front man” with a stage appeal. Tim was the charismatic one – people appeal. Bridgetta drew the women who tend to shy away from politics. Mary Malazkuhn knew what she was doing when she chose those 4, didn’t she?
It would be a poetic justice to appoint both Tim Rarus and Jerry Covell to serve on board, Tim especially because IKJ had him arrested on that Black Friday, 18 years after he helped IKJ become the first deaf prez. What an ungrateful narrissicist he was!

Why does the administrator close his GallyNet archives?
That is the most unheard of thing. The archives of my four lists for hearing professionals’ research are open to non-subscribers.
Moreover, I used to be a subscriber to more than 20 lists, but I unsubscribed to all of them once I learned that their archives are open to any non-subscriber. We do not live in a Communist country where glasnot is not recognised.

Harvey Goodstein was appointed as a member of the BoT after he retired from Gallaudet.

We need more women on the BoT.
The BoT decides many things, including salaries. I want all women professionals at Gallaudet to be equally paid as men professionals are. I would like to see women of Generation X to be appointed for the BoT. They truly represent today’s students as well as faculty. That is why I am nominating two brilliant women who are pscyhologiosts,
namely, Dr.Candace McCullough and Sharon Duchesneau. Visit them at http://www.ascDeaf.com/blog.
They discuss and opine and analyse very scholarly and intelligently. Moreover, they do not belittle people. They are very caring people.

Good names here!
I also nominated Sheryl Emery from Michigan… she’s really great! Gallaudet Alumni…American-African and has been involved in MANY organizations, as well as a former VR counselor for MI.
She’s married to a Deaf man as well as adopting two deaf children, a foster deaf child including her own hearing biological son.
GREAT woman – I would have never got this far in education had it not been her.

Hi
I want to respond to what Cy said: “I think I prefer the candidates’ educational backgrounds and career/resume to exceed the MA level.”
I respectfully beg to differ here. Even though I have a PhD myself, I do not believe that it is in our community’s best interest to base candidates’ qualifications on their degree level. There are many, many wonderful Deaf people without post-MA degrees who can contribute to the BoT. Do you realize that your criteria would eliminate Ella Lentz (and many others)who only has a BA, but who has many academic accomplishments to her name?
Thank you.

PS If anything, if we are going to discuss requirements for BoT members, I think that over a degree requirement, we should make being a Gallaudet alumnus a requirement (at least for the BoT members who are not from the Senate or the House, unless, of course, we ever elect a Deaf Senator or Representative). I would think alumni have a vested interest in Gallaudet. But then again, this requirement might eliminate some great Deaf candidates from NTID, CSUN, or elsewhere, which is why I’d be careful about making requirements that are too exclusionary.
