Good Riddance, Mercy Coogan AKA Auntie Sophie?
Commentary: Coogan waged a vicious media war against Gallaudet, promoting the lie “Not Deaf Enough”, presumably under the orders of Jordan. Not only did she try to deny the misconduct of DPS and their handling of pepper spray cans during the aborted HMB raid, she also attempted to minimize the felonious actions of the DPS and PPD employees assaulting the students during Brentwood Gate Ambush. She may have been doing her job, but I hope she will feel remorseful for the damage she had inflicted on Gallaudet and the students by her egregious actions. Many suspect her the writer of the column Auntie Sophie in the campus newsletter, On the Green, though it has never been proven.  MZ

I never understood why BoT permitted Mercy Coogan to slander against Gallaudet University for so many months
March 26th, 2007 at 1:22 pm
I bet she thinks she has not done anything wrong.
March 26th, 2007 at 1:56 pm
If so, this is disquieting as she did lie to many parents who called after they heard the media reports about students mishandled and threatened with pepper spray.
March 26th, 2007 at 2:17 pm
Unfortunately, she had to do her job. She had grown a thick skin!
Now we will see a new PR and may do the same thing as President tells her.
March 26th, 2007 at 2:42 pm
Mercy Coogan never lied to the parents! The protest is over, so let her enjoy her retirement party!
March 26th, 2007 at 3:29 pm
Pamela, too many of us saw the damning memo from the PR Dept during that weekend.
I am glad to see Mercy Coogan out of Gallaudet. Hopefully the public relations dept will then become more aggressive in cleaning up the tattered, tarnished image of Gallaudet she left behind.
March 26th, 2007 at 4:14 pm
Oh, I am curious to know who is the real and true Aunt Sophie? I hope you will demystiify her sooner or later.
Smile.
March 26th, 2007 at 4:23 pm
It is my understanding that the PR department is under the direction of the President of Gallaudet University. Is this correct? If so, more than likely, Mercy Coogan did not do anything on her own before, during and after the protest. She was instructed to do what she was ask to do. Since she was so near to her retirement, she was not going to do anything that would risk her retirement plan and I don’t blame her as I would have done exactly the same thing. She has herself and her family to worry about. She is not going to questions anything that IKJ instructed her to do and risk losing what she has work so hard for over all these years. If this was happening very early in her career, then maybe she would have walk out but that wasn’t the case. She was stuck in the middle and did what was best for her. The protest is over and let her retire in peace. We got what we wanted so let be patient and let the situation ride out it course as I am sure the truth will finally be told.

Mutti, I disagree with you regarding Mercy’s choices. For a former nun, she performed immoral acts. What’s more, she had almost three months to clean up Gallaudet’s image, but she didn’t.
There is a line I will not cross over. It is interesting to hear you will have no qualms doing what Mercy did. At least I will have a clean conscious.
March 26th, 2007 at 5:24 pm
Buh-bye Mercy!
March 26th, 2007 at 5:26 pm
Steven Mutti:
Yay, how convenient for you to say that. To avoid being fired by Jordan, one would have to sell his or her soul to the Devil. If against my principle, I would have extended my resignation to Jordan instead of kowtowing to him. Look at Colin Powell. He resigned instead of selling his soul to Bush!
Do not be a slave to anyone.

#11 Comparing Colin Powell situation with Mercy Googan situation is not a good comparison at all. Two totally different situation and I don’t need to go into details on that one. Your statement of “Selling your Soul to the Devil” is pretty extreme for Mercy Googan situation. Again I don’t need to go into details. If Mercy Coogan acted so bad on her own, why didn’t Bob Davilla do anything about it. He has the authority to fire her as soon as he became President.
#9 Maybe Bob Davilla did not want her to do anything in regards to cleaning up the PR mess. No one really knows what went on behind close doors. It is all speculative!!
All I am trying to say, let quit blaming people who reported to IKJ as we have no idea what they were going through. You all have to be in that position to understand what it was like. I don’t accept what was happening in the PR department but it is wrong to assume she was 100% for whatever IKJ instructed her to do. Let her retire in peace and move forward.
March 26th, 2007 at 6:30 pm
Unlike you, Steve, I will not compromise my integrity by lying to the parents who entrusted Gallaudet with the safety of their children.
The protest is over, however Gallaudet hasn’t healed yet. Coogan never apologized for the wrongs she had committed. Her job was to put Gallaudet in a positive light, not disintegrate it.
About Davila and Coogan, is it any coincidence that tomorrow is her retirement day?
Again, good riddance, Coogan!

Someone is brownnosing Gallaudet in hopes someone will be appointed to BoT
You can read between the words.

I have seen her with the reporters. She fought for Jordan from her heart. She did not do for Gally. She did it for Jordan. I have seen her on TV and newspapers. I am glad she is retired immediately. She owe the parents an apology for her brutal action. As a former nun, she should be ashamed of herself for her action. Good riddance.
March 26th, 2007 at 11:41 pm
She is a former nun who married a former priest.

Steven Mutti:
You have NOT read Colin Powell’s latest book.
You also have not read Harry Belafonte’s article that
some black people sell themselves to a master, viz, Bush.

Steven Mutti:
As someone who was there almost everyday of the protest- I can tell you that you are wrong. I saw first hand what Coogan did. At every chance she had she used the “Not enough deaf” card.
She would sneak up behind a deaf person being interviewed- and afterward, would grab the interviewer and used lies and false information to present the Administration point-of-view. (without signing,of course) She did this despite knowing that it was all lies.
And FYI- I know (for a fact) that most of what she did…she did on her own-not thru instructions from IKJ.
She has damage the Deaf community.
And I, for one, am thrilled that she is finished with Gallaudet.

Mercy Coogan is definitely “Aunt Sophie” alias.
What make you being not sure about Mercy Coogan as “Aunt Sophie” for “On the Green” campus publication?
Aunt Sophie once infamously mocked “Gallaudet community have their own mind!” in her last November 2006.
Whose responsible lies with the “On the Green” publication is the Office of Public Relations.
Mercy Coogan would say such things like “have their own mind!”
The Office of Public Relations people constantly reminded me that Mercy Coogan was truly a sweetest person. Why would they so eager to tell me about Mercy Coogan?

RLM, so far there are speculations. I need concrete evidence. If you have some, let me know
