Washington, DC (WUSA) — The protests went on for months at Gallaudet
University as students vehemently opposed the selection of Jane
Fernandez to be the next president. They took over buildings and
shutdown the campus. But, 9NEWS NOW has learned, those actions could
jeopardize the school’s accreditation. Interim President Dr. Robert
DaVila says his top priority is retaining the school’s accreditation,
but he’s worried. He’s meeting with students explaining to them
that
if they lose their accreditation, they could have serious trouble
finding jobs. If Gallaudet loses accreditation, it would hurt more than
just students’ job prospects. It could be disastrous for the university
because Congress could cut funding. Congressional funding accounts for
more than 70% of Gallaudet’s budget. To retain the accreditation the
school has a deadline of March 1, 2007 to submit a plan that will put
Gallaudet on the right track.
Commentary: Again only IKJ adminstration team has itself to blame for violating the university protocols and shared governance over the years. The incompetence, oppression, and detrimental academic policies have been reflected in the last five years of poor evaluations of PART by Dept of Education, including the failing grade which was never shared with the accrediting agency. It is encouraging to see how much inspiration and confidence Davila has created among Gallaudet Community, even though he has been on the job for merely three weeks. elizabeth

I’m continued to be disgusted by the media of how the focus of blame lies with the students. They protested, therefore, it’s their fault? Ridiculous. Everyone knows that the blame lies within ijk admin. Lazy journalism at its best.

Right on, Elizabeth. We must blame the IKJ Administration for the sins they committed in its name.

How can anyone not look at the actions of the protesters and not only the administration as to the blame for this mess.
Responsible adults do not throw temper tantrums every time they don’t get thier way. The protest could have been carried out without the personal attacks and blocking of gates.
Now we can see what the consequences could be and some are trying to point the finger. Remember this, when you point one finger at someone, thier are ALWAYS three fingers pointing back at you. The blame game is what children do. I wish some of you could grow up!

Why do some people equate protests as ‘temper tantrums? This protest occurs as a result of absent shared governance and oppression for many years and is supported by the majority of Gallaudet Community. By your own words, you are also accusing both hearing and deaf faculty and staff members of having temper tantrums. Obviously it just shows your lack of understanding the real issues fueling the protest. Even the accrediting agency could see the systematic flaws, hence their decisions to put Gallaudet on probation until Davila can clean up the mess left by both IKJ’s and JKF’s administrations. There are ample evidence of their incompetencies, if you want to remove your blinders.

Janet, you’re not seeing it. The school’s accreditation status lies with the Admin. They have to ensure they are up to par. Peggy’s biased effort was trying to divert attention from years of ijk and jkf admins. onto few weeks of “those actions” of the students. Her tactic is extremely childish. Anyone can see that fallacy, IMO.

The problem is if the adminstrators made one mistake, the protesters usually poured all the blames on them.

I respectfully disagree. From what I’ve been reading and hearing, the administrators have been making many mistakes for many years without taking accountablity until the stakeholders finally got fed up and protested last year.

MZ, I Never said the administration never made mistakes. So I suggest before you go on another tirade you read and comprehend what has been written.
Of course there were mistakes made by the admin. Your problem is that you believe that some of the outrageous behavior carried out by some of the protesters is completely acceptable behavior. Its not! Just like some of the behavior by IKJ admin. You need to get out of ther tunnel you are in and see the light!

The Jordan-Kelleher-Kimmel admin was unable to produce any respectable measurable outcome in the last 6 years. The accreditation committee pounded them for doing nothing. Now, Jordan and Kelleher are gone (Kimmel is the next to leave?) but the damages they did are all around.
Nobody would be able to convince any decent person on Earth that the short 3-days long lockout last October caused the disastrous legacy of the failed Jordanite leadership that rambled around for way too many (18) years.
Come on folks, be reasonable!
