BoT: One Out, Three Uncertain

Four BoT members’ terms are up this Spring.

Bob Graham was one of the longest members.  A term of a BoT member lasts four years and can be renewed for two more terms, according to the BoT bylaws. However, Graham’s term was extended for the fourth time.

It is uncertain whether the terms of the other three BoT members will be renewed or not.

Ken Levinson and Tom Humphries have to go. I have not heard positive about them. Remember their remarks about the deaf people and ASL? Remember Tom s behavior at the meeting with SBG President. It is really unacceptable behavior. I feel Tom looked President of SBG down with his attitude. I have read many negative comments about Ken and Tom. They are overstayed their seats… time for them to go. Please don’t let them renewed their terms. We need new faces with positive energy. Thanks!!

I wonder if the Board members are impeachable. If so, then we can press for the impeachment of certain Board members for the sake of history of all the Deaf.

  3. Jean Boutcher Says:

Yes, impeachable. Generally, a tenured professor can be malfeasanced if he has defamed or made an anti-Semitic slur at his Jewish student. The same is true with a member of the BoT who degrades deaf people. Why? Because deaf people are members of an ethncicity known as a linguistic minority.

Boy, I notice how Deaf protesters accuse others for degrading Deaf while they degrade the deaf who do not want to use ASL.
I can see clearly like crystal there will be no healing and Gallaudet will crash with more BoT resigning knowing their stocks there would crash.
Soon no more university for the deaf just because of these idiotic protesters led by hearies like Brian Riley and the old narrow minded Deafies.

Democrats are now after Republicans only to make our American society a better, safer and more democratic place in the world. Aren’t they Americans at each other’s throat? Why should Deaf people not be at each other’s throat if we realize something goes awry? Gallaudet University has been promoting the inclusiveness banner only to require Deaf people to supress their own identity, language and culture because it’s what hearing people like to see or hear the word inclusiveness, being unbeknown that Deaf people have ASL, a form of speech.
Brian Riley is one of the most important informants we the Deaf will ever have. Since you use the plural term hearies, why make the scapegoat out of Brian alone? Tell us about other hearies who led the protest.

Hello Carl. Long time no see. As for that post by Bison Chaser, I would suggest not to feed the troll.

    To Bison Chase in #4,

Actually, had it not been for audism, deafism would not have been born. History is the best lesson. It has taught us that deaf people have been oppressed for more than 3,000 years since Aristotle theorised that deaf people could not reason if they could not speak. Renaissance Italy’s mathematican-physician Giroloma Cardano debunked Aristotle’s theory because his deaf son could reason, read, and write. There was no school for the deaf in France before de l’Epée saw Jean Massieu. Massieu had the deaf parents and more than 10 deaf siblings. All of them used their own “home” sign language. No speech skills. Did De l’Epée consider Massieu incapable to reason.
Au contraïre, he came forward to him and made friends with him. It turned out that Jean
Massieu COULD reason, discussing science and God.
Now de l’Epée founded a school for the deaf in the 18th century. Clerc founded
in the USA in the 19th century. All deaf people used sign language Martha’s Vineyard — themselves from ancestors of Great Britain.

    What happened later?

    Audists! They were also
paternalists. They controlled and monopolised deaf people.
They thought sign language was the language of a monkey!
Results? The 1880 Milan Conference. Audism has become more powerful! NAD’s Veditz combatted against audism and tried to preserve ASL.

To save sign language, Deafism was born.

    Solution? Audists must leave
deaf individuals alone and let them decide to use sign langauge or use speech. If a deaf individual wants sign langauge, fine. If a deaf indvidual wants speech, fine.
Peace as long as we respect our options and rights. Gallaudet must protect all schools for the deaf that use sign language as well as educate hearing parents of deaf children that learning sign language for deaf babies is a muuuuuuust. Different studies have proven again and again that sign language is the best for deaf children.
Many bright signing deaf children are dumbed down after they enter school. How? Audistic teachers do not like sign langauge and have lower expectations for them and pay more attention to hearing parents’s non-signing deaf children. Meaning? We need more deaf teachers who use sign language. Memorise Dr. Allen Sussman’s famous saying in 1988: “Plantation Mentality” and BoT Chair Jane Spillman’s degrading insult to the Gallaudet community by saying that she was selecting a hearing Dr. Zinser because deaf people “are not ready to function in the hearing world.”

I hope that you will have a better understanding about the cause and the effects of
AUDISM vs DEAFISM. Easy for you to remember: Audism was born BEFORE Deafism was born.

Jean, BINGO! I am coming for my prize!

Again to Bison Chaser in #4:

Brian Riley was a valuable protester in the UFG 2006. We were very fortunate to have a hearing person who was a loyalist to the worthy cause.
He majors in ASL linguistics, His interest in deaf people is genuine and sincere. How many hearing loyalists? Few.

  10. Albert W Says:

    We need more Brian Rileys.

  11. Brian Riley Says:

Wow, thank you, friends. I’m touched by your sentiments.

  12. Jen D. Says:

I am also a proud “hearie” that took part in the protest. Brian I read your posting on the website about your reactions to the protest, and it hit home. I am a preschool teacher at a school for the Deaf in NYC. I drove to DC multiple times during the protest, to help do whatever was needed. I was there on Black Friday, and watched several of my friends get arrested. I was there earlier that same day when the order was given to arrest the students, and I will never ever forget how heartbroken I felt. Gallaudet had always been a somewhat magical place for me, since I grew up about 30 minutes away from campus, and would go visit often while I was an ASL student in high school. But that day my magical illusion was shattered. A lot of my friends and co-workers didn’t understand why I felt the need to be involved. I’m hearing. It’s not my fight. But I love my students, and I was fighting for them. I wanted there to still be a Gallaudet when they are ready to go to college in 15 years. I wanted Deaf culture and history preserved. So I did what I could, interpreted, donated money, stood at the front gate, held signs, participated in the March, went to the rally in NYC..etc etc. And I don’t regret one sleepless minute of it. Obviously it was all worth it, Dr. Davila is doing an excellent job so far. He is making his every move transparent, and keeping everyone in the community involved. If you watched his acceptance speech you would realize how in touch he is with the general community, as he made remarks that referred to comments about him on the blogs.

So yeah…there are other “hearies” out there too that were involved, and that will constantly be advocates for and in the Deaf community. I’m very proud to be one of them :)

  13. Mishka Zena Says:

We were so blessed by many hearing protesters who came to Gallaudet and showed their support! Thank you, all! :)

  14. Brian Riley Says:

    Jen D,

    Wow, that’s great.

Actually, it *is* your fight, too, because bigotry and corruption hurts everybody.

The Jordan administration was very, very corrupt and Jordan and Fernandes were being very harmful to American society in general, as well as harmful toward the deaf community in particular.

    Brian
