Problems with Videotape of Davila?
After a seventh attempt, I gave up trying to watch the videotape of Holmes announcing the interim presidency. What a big disappointment. Issued by the public relations department, I actually expected a better job. Why are they broadcasting a videotape of such an important announcement that keeps freezing?
Brian Riley was kind enough to prepare a written transcript, but I want to see the announcement of Davila, using his own language. How many of you have this problem with the videotape freezing? Some people have already complained to me, but I know of others who are able to see the whole tape without any problems. I am uncertain why that happens.Â
This is frustrating for those of us who were unable to see such an important ceremony.  elizabeth

Elizabeth,
It looks like your computer needs the updated Macromedia Player. Click START at the left bottomclick “Windows Updates.” It will take you to Microsoft. When you are on the Microsoft page, you will see “Install”. Click it.
Also try to install SP2 to add
to your Windows XP Media Center.
P.-S. Microsoft will not update Windows 98. Only
Windows XP.

Jean,
I upgraded the latest Macromedia Player Sunday so I can view the website. Is SP2 the latest upgrade or is that a different program?

I have no trouble with Dr. Davila’s vlog.
Elizabeth, if the latest update of Macromedia Player does not solve the problem, you probably upgrade the Service Pack 2(SP2) to your Windows XP in order to support this Macromedia Player vlog. To obtain the SP2 from the Microsoft, open your Windows Internet Explorer browser and use the Update tool to let the Microsoft check your PC and give you the list of the softwares you need to download like SP2. SP2 is a huge software, it would take a while to download and install. I can’t answer if you use another system like Apple’s OSX.

Thanks, Greg, for the clarification. I checked and I already have SP2. This computer is only two or three months old. I don’t understand what the problem is. I’ll call the public relations dept and ask them to fix the problem so all the viewers can watch the tape, like they do with the previous tapes. I’ve read Riley’s transcript and am very impressed with Davila’s speech. He’s definitely the leader to get Gallaudet back on the right track!

Elizabeth,
I have just learned that many people have tried in vain to view the same video. One of them said that he could not access it after clicking it
repeatedly. Two hours later, he went back to the same video. Lo and behold, it worked! It means that it is not the problem in your computer; rather, it is the problem of the PR at Galladuet. Perhaps you would have to notify Mercy Coogan of the PR about this matter.
My new computer is three weeks old and will be readily installed with Windows Vista
after sending an order note with a receipt from Best Buy.
If I understand the salesman
correctly, Windows Vista (the 2007 version) will function much better for videos, DVD, etc.

Jean, I find it very curious that the public relations department has this tape not fully running smoothly for all viewers whereby their other tapes work perfectly fine. Since this tape is an important step forward toward healing, I would think the PR. Dept would be vested in fixing this problem immediately, but the problems still linger after four days……. how come?

I just checked the video again this morning, the video still looked great and smooth. How come the PR gets the blame for the video problem?? The video could be choppy when the server experiences high load of internet traffic. I am using Verizon DSL which is more stable than the cable company.

Greg, I used Verizon DSL with same problems. I upgraded to Verizon FOIS yesterday and still encountered problems. The fact that so many other people have difficulties accessing to this videotape shows it is a Gallaudet website problem, not a server problem.
December 14th, 2006 at 11:18 am
It is definitely a serve problem, not a computer problem. I use a Mac Pro which is a very high end server and still struggled to open the video and after switching to Camino web browser it started working so it isn’t a macromedia issue it is either a server issue from too many people accessing it at once or a browser issue since so many of us have different browsers.

And also it is not a website problem because the website is fine. A server problem means it is overloaded by too many people trying to view it at once and you have to remember that gally’s videos aren’t widely viewed until this one. So they probably didn’t have the bandwidth to handle so many requests so it was probably a server problem if so many people complained about inaccessibility. Just the fact that people can still get to the webpage and view the window without any video showing proves that it isn’t a website coding problem it has to be a server problem or compatibility problem in terms of compatible web browser.

This is Cindy King, Executive Director of Academic Technology (AT) at Gallaudet. AT staff videotaped the Interim President event and published it online.
As of Tuesday, Dec 12, we already had more than 2,000 people view the video. It was first published on a streaming server (Flash Communication Server) and demand quickly overwhelmed that server. We moved the video to a web server, which improved access and created other versions (Quicktime and Windows Media), although these were not published on the PR web site. The PR web site and the AT video servers are different servers, so access to one is not related to access to the other.
The video requests for several days also maxed out the campus Internet connection. We have recommended that Information Technology Services (ITS) expand the bandwidth to the outside world.
During the live event, we used a Content Delivery Network (CDN), which allows users to view the video on lots of different servers. At the last minute, the CDN told us that they could not support MACs and browsers other than Internet Explorer. This increased the demand for the video directly from Gallaudet and again maxed out the Internet connection.
We believe it’s important that Gallaudet content be stored on Gallaudet servers, so we do not use services like Google Video, You Tube, and Blip.TV.
If you cannot view the video now, please send an email to techhelp.guest@gallaudet.edu. I have watched the video many times from off-campus in the last several days and have had no problems. We’re happy to help diagnose problems.
You also might be interested in checking out the video tribute to Gil Eastman at http://academictech.gallaudet.edu/tributes. That video was published in Flash, Quicktime, and Windows Media. We welcome input (via techhelp.guest@gallaudet.edu) on your preferences.
Side Note: FYI. A team of students and AT staff from the TV department will be videotaping the US Sports Team in Salt Lake City in February. The videos will be posted online at http://2007.usdeafsports.org.
